Siberian ginseng (Latin - Eleutherococcus Senticosus) is a member of the Araliaceae plant family and is also commonly known as eleuthero.

Although it comes from the same plant family as panax ginseng, it is an entirely distinct plant with different active constituents.

Siberian ginseng is a deciduous perennial shrub that grows up to 3m (10ft) high and is indigenous to the forests of Eastern Asia, including China, Japan, Korea and Siberia.

The plant has thorny and spiked branches and grows densely, forming almost impenetrable thickets.

It has long-stalked and palmate leaves, with globular umbrella shaped flowers and black berries.

Siberian ginseng has a 2,000 year history of use in China, it gained popularity in the Western World after the mid twentieth century when Russian scientists, Dr. Israel Brekhman and his colleagues, began to look for natural herbs that could support health and endurance.

The scientists were searching for an economical substitution for panax, which had become expensive and was in short supply, and began researching eleutherococcus.

The scientists found that eleutherococcus seemed to have the same adaptogenic properties as the panax variety and could be grown faster.

The term “adaptogen” was first coined in 1947 by the Russian scientist Dr. Nikolai V.

Lazarev, who described it as “an agent that allows the body to adapt to the stressful circumstances”.

The dried root of the herb is commonly used in herbal preparations.
